Rogers served in the US Army during the Vietnam war receiving numerous awards, including the Bronze Star Medal, a Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and many others. He retired from the US Army after serving more than twenty four years. After his retirement from the Army, Rogers went to work and later retired from the Texas Department of Corrections.
